Training in Affairs Does Not Mean Enduring Everything at Work

Feeling virtuous in quiet proves little, Wang argues; practice appears when events exert pressure. Yet training in affairs neither glorifies abuse nor demands limitless endurance. It develops proportion where values meet friction.

A person must temper himself in affairs before he can stand firm; only then can he be settled both in stillness and in action.

Why correctness disappears when events arrive

Without conflicting interests, almost anyone endorses candour, respect and long-term thinking. The test comes when a deadline closes, power is unequal, or a mistake may become visible. We hide bad news, treat a colleague as an obstacle, or call our fear “the greater good.” Training in affairs brings abstract assent into scenes where it has a price. Events are not suffering designed for our improvement; they are mirrors in which motive, habit and judgement appear together.

Training is not submission

The claim that all suffering produces growth is a dangerous substitution. Sustained humiliation, unlawful demands and irreversible harm do not become right when renamed training. Wang’s practice remains organised by innate knowing and the correction of self-centred desire. What is overcome is the treatment of status and gain as the only measure, not the existence of boundaries. Refusing an unjust instruction, preserving evidence or leaving a harmful setting may require more steadiness than silent endurance. The measure is not how long I tolerated pain, but whether action lets people face reality more honestly.

Emotion as evidence, not command

Training in affairs does not suppress emotion. Anger may indicate a crossed boundary, shame an endangered image, and anxiety an unknown condition. Each supplies evidence but none dictates the response. Describe what happened before naming what it means; distinguish bodily reaction, interpretation and verifiable risk. That sequence creates a small interval between stimulus and action. We need neither be carried away by feeling nor perform a false calm to protect our image.

A concrete workplace experiment

Choose one recurring scene that makes you lose proportion, such as an unplanned assignment. Beforehand, write the boundary, negotiable terms and facts still required. In the moment ask one clear question: “Which existing commitment should move if this becomes the priority?” Afterwards record the strongest thought, what you did and the response. Repeat three times. Did the feared consequence occur? Which language protected both the relationship and the facts? Training then means developing transferable judgement in events, not allowing events to strike you repeatedly.
