Can Quiet Sitting Resolve Mental Overload? Chuanxilu Is More Cautious
Wang recommends sitting quietly when the mind is scattered and reading when it is sluggish. No method is magical: identify the present distortion, then return from quiet to life.
In one’s daytime practice, if one feels distracted and unsettled, one should sit quietly; if one feels too lazy to read, one should set about reading. This too is prescribing medicine according to the illness.
The place of quiet sitting
Wang never makes sitting the sole entrance to truth. His memorable principle is medicine according to illness: sit when scattered; read when laziness is the problem. Even for one person, the prescription changes with the condition. Quiet can lower stimulation and gather interrupted attention. If temporary ease is mistaken for completed cultivation, or affairs are avoided to preserve purity, calm becomes another attachment. Stillness is not the destination; it is a condition for seeing the next step again.
Mental overload is not an ancient diagnosis
The contemporary term may refer to rumination, decision fatigue, self-criticism or conflict, and it may overlap with anxiety or depression requiring professional care. Explaining every pain as selfish desire adds shame and asks a classical text to carry what it cannot. Chuanxilu offers a language of observation, not medical diagnosis. When distress persistently affects sleep, eating, safety or basic functioning, qualified support takes priority; philosophical practice can only supplement it.
Identify thoughts instead of suppressing them
Ordering the mind not to think often makes a thought louder. A more useful practice separates thought from fact. “The project is a failure” is a judgement; “the client has not replied for two weeks” is a fact. “Everyone is disappointed” is an inference; “my manager named two defects” is observable. After a few quiet minutes, writing these apart reveals whether the load comes from a real demand or repeated interpretation. The goal is not a blank mind but fewer opportunities for interpretation to impersonate fact.
What must happen after ten minutes
A practical session may be simple: two minutes noticing breath and body, three allowing the loudest thought without debate, three writing fact, interpretation and untested assumption, then two choosing one action. If sitting produces temporary comfort but never changes a relationship, schedule or help-seeking decision, change the medicine. The Yangming test is not depth of absorption but whether one returns to affairs with greater discrimination, responsibility and capacity to act.
