Meditations

‘The obstacle becomes the way’ does not mean thanking harm

Meditations 5.20 turns blocked action into new material; it does not romanticise trauma or excuse a wrongdoer.

The mind converts every obstacle to action into material for what takes precedence: what hinders the work advances it, and what blocks the road becomes the road.Meditations, Book 5.20

The direct answer: revise the next act, not the past

Book 5.20 says an operation may be stopped while intention can turn elsewhere. Changed conditions become material for choice; loss was not necessary and the wrongdoer earns no thanks.

Name loss before agency

Record what was genuinely lost, what remains protectable or repairable, and what route must change. Illness may cancel a plan while making care and support today's task.

Adaptation is not compulsory growth

Ask what can be done today without denying cost. Preserve evidence, seek help, rest or revise the aim. Growth is a possible result, not homework owed by the injured person.

Do not use the line against somebody

Offer practical help and acknowledge injustice first. The passage is for seeking one's next choice, not reducing empathy, accountability or compensation.
