From ‘Renewing’ People to Being Close to Them
A dispute over one character reveals two postures: treating people as objects awaiting improvement, or entering their circumstances and accepting responsibility for nurture and security.
To say ‘being close to the people’ includes both teaching and nurturing them. To say ‘renewing the people’ makes the meaning feel one-sided.Chuanxilu, Volume I · Passage 3
Why Wang keeps the old reading
Xu Ai asks why the Great Learning should retain “being close to the people” rather than Zhu Xi’s “renewing the people.” Wang’s answer is not mere philology. Closeness includes care, education and material nurture, while renewal can narrow into change administered from above. Both may value growth, but their grammatical subject differs. Renewal tempts the leader to occupy the position of completion; closeness first requires a relationship and understanding of the limits within which another person acts.
The organisational impulse to remake people
When managers design processes, values and training, they often locate failure in employees: people do not understand, lack motivation, or show insufficient ownership. More explanation, assessment and mobilisation follow, while conflicting objectives, missing information and unequal costs go unexamined. Turning a system failure into an attitude defect is a quiet form of condescension. A closeness-oriented leader asks first: if I occupied this role, would present conditions permit the action being demanded?
Closeness is not appeasement
Being close does not mean gentle language or granting every request. It includes naming constraints, distributing responsibility and refusing unsustainable demands. The difference is that affected people do not become abstract numbers. Reasons are explained, contest and feedback remain possible, and facts can return from the front line. A leader may make a hard decision, but cannot ask others to carry its cost while judging their virtue only by whether they accept a grand narrative.
Turn closeness into an organisational action
Choose one policy that people struggle to use. Before writing more guidance, watch three direct users complete a real task. Record each pause, workaround and added cost; distinguish misunderstanding from missing authority, time or conflicting goals. After revision, publish the reasons and unresolved limits. Closeness is not a leadership personality. It is a factual circuit through which those who bear consequences enter judgement and leadership moves nearer to reality.
