All Things as One Body Is More Than Romantic Empathy
Wang’s unity does not claim that we can feel everyone’s feelings. Another being left without its proper place marks our benevolence as unfinished, moving cultivation from private peace to public consequence.
The benevolent person regards Heaven, Earth, and the myriad things as one body. If even one thing should fail to find its proper place, then my benevolence remains incomplete.
Unity begins from embodied response
Chuanxilu often explains benevolence through the body: when a hand or foot is injured, the body cares without first calculating return. Unity extends this responsiveness beyond intimacy without pretending that emotion is equally intense for everyone. Feeling has distance, but responsibility cannot be allocated only by feeling. A stranger’s suffering may not hurt like a relative’s, yet if my consumption, institution or silence contributes to harm, a relation requiring judgement already exists.
Move from empathy to structure
Digital life invites us to equate unity with feeling another’s pain: witness disaster, share a story, grieve briefly. Empathy tires and favours those who resemble us or appear in compelling images. Wang’s statement that one displaced thing leaves benevolence incomplete points toward structural responsibility: who bears cost, who lacks voice, and which convenience rests on invisible harm? Benevolence is not only warm feeling; it makes room for others in resources, rules and attention.
Unity does not abolish boundaries
Carrying every suffering as one’s own soon produces impotence and resentment. Unity does not make a person infinitely available or require individuals to absorb institutional duties. Boundaries sustain responsibility: distinguish what I directly cause, what I can influence and what I can only support; accept a defined share where agency is strongest; connect other problems to suitable organisations. Limited capacity does not deny relation. It refuses to disguise unkept promises as universal care.
A sustainable public practice
Choose an issue genuinely connected to daily life—accessibility in a team, labour conditions in a supply chain, or neighbourhood waste. Draw three circles: direct responsibility, influence and concern without present control. Correct one thing in the first today; find a collaborator or propose a rule in the second; keep only reliable sources and a fixed attention rhythm in the third. After a month, review material change rather than the intensity of feeling. Unity becomes a method of allocating responsibility, not merely a worldview.
